What is Modafinil ?

Modafinil is a safe prescriptive drug used to treat narcolepsy and sleeping disorders.

It is considered a “smartdrug” in the scope of Nootropics and is used primarily to increase levels of productivity and alertness that are similar to caffeine but without the edge.

Although it requires a prescription, there is a large online market where consumers can purchase it under names such as; Modiodal, Alertec, Sunpharma Modalert, Provigil and Modopro.

Modafinil is approved by the FDA in the USA and is considered a scheduled IV drug. Since 2006, there have been many generic brands available.

Modafinil, is also used off-label to potentially treat conditions including fibromyalgia, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease, to name a few.

The most common replacement for Modafinil is Adrafinil, which is thought to provide similar cognitive effects and does not require a prescription.

Alittle History on Modafinil

Michel Jouvet, a french medical professor, created Modafinil in the 1970’s as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy, a sleeping disorder associated with fainting and frequent bouts of sleeping during the day.

It was originally patented by Cephalon Inc and was sold to Teva. It is famous for it’s use among the British and American military for keeping soldiers awake during long periods of service.

How Modafinil Works

How it works exactly is not known, however, studies have shown that it alters natural brain chemicals (neurotransmitters).

It seems to work on the histaminergic system, increasing the levels of histamine in the central nervous system. Histamine is released by signaling orexin peptides, regulating wakefulness.

When orexin are activated, it affects Dopamine levels that work on pleasure, wakefulness and enhanced cognition.
